From the series: Europe is Hot, Berlin is on Fire

Cemetery to 5000 Soviet Soldiers, monstrous war memorial, commemorating 80,000 dead soldiers, in the middle of a park in Berlin; this daunting remembrance masterpiece is known as the Soviet War Memorial.“Those that fail to learn from history, are doomed to repeat it.” Winston Churchill

Basically, I stumbled upon this monstrous commemoration, the Soviet War Memorial, while out walking in the beautiful Treptower Park.  Across the way I spotted a massive archway with a wide stone path begging to be passed through. High above on the arch it reads: “Ewiger Ruhm den Helden, die für Freiheit und Unabhängigkeit der sozialistischen Heimat gefallen sind” which translated says “Eternal glory to the heroes who have fallen for freedom and independence of the socialist homeland”. What opened before my eyes as I passed through the entrance I never expected.

Treptower Park – What Makes This Park one of the Best in Berlin

From the series: Europe is Hot, Berlin is on Fire!!!

The huge city of Berlin has so much to see and do, it can at times be overwhelming. Edging the beautiful Spree River, Treptower Park offers a refuge from the hustle and bustle of city life for both tourists and locals alike. Relaxation, sports, boating, an island, a war memorial, special events and concerts make this the perfect all round park to detox, destress, energize and refresh body, mind and soul. Romantic walk in the park anyone?

Amazing Berlin, the city that doesn’t sleep offers so much to see and do, even if you run 24 hours a day you will not be able to explore everything in a 2 week visit. The good news is, it gives you a reason to keep coming back. Recently, needing a battery reload, I headed to a green area which the bus had passed several times, and discovered the Treptower Park, arguably one of the best parks in Berlin.

Insel der Jugend, Isle of Youth, Island of Love, Berlin Island, One Place

From the series: Europe is Hot, Berlin is on Fire!!

I found the Isle of Youth! Located in the beautiful Treptower Park, the summer island beer garden, Insel der Jugend translates to Isle of Youth. Food, drinks and outdoor seating on the Spree lends to a beach atmosphere, completed by the colourful pedal boats, canoes and SUP rentals lazily circling the island. Can this island magically restore one’s youth, or is it just wishful thinking?

Famous Boxhagener Platz, Boxi, Friedrichshain – Series, Europe is Hot, Berlin is on Fire

From the Series: Europe is Hot, Berlin is on Fire!!!

In the neighbourhood of Friedrichshain, Berlin we found the famous Boxhagener Platz – meeting place, market, restaurants and bars with a cool hip vibe. The heart of Friedrichshain; yes, Europe is hot, but Berlin is on Fire – sizzling, non-stop action.

Boxhagener Platz, fondly nicknamed Boxi by the locals, was built in 1903. This multi-purpose park area is suffering a slight identity crisis, constantly bringing it 2 steps forward and one step back. Persistent clean up and restoration is met with resistance by
