Although we ventured out at times, our “stomping grounds” were basically the SR78 stretch from Lakeport to Okeechobee, west to NW side of The Big O (fond local term for Lake Okeechobee).

For Anglers, Fishermen, wannabe fishermen and those who simply like to try something new, Lake O is paradise. There is an abundance of guided tours, charters, commercial and sport fishing as well as boat rentals. Large mouthed bass, black crappie and catfish are the sought after catches. Some local Diner Restaurants will cook your catch for you, some serve their own wonderfully prepared fish. I can not resist the tasty fried catfish fingers with hushpuppies!

The Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail (LOST) loops around the lake on a 10 meter (35’) high raised dike, called the Herbert Hoover Dike; that means 177 KM of scenic paved and gravel trails. The trail is accessible to hikers, cyclers, horseback riders, and rollerbladers – fee free! Resting lean-tos and 14 camping areas can be found adjacent to the trail.

Birders / Birdwatchers and Wildlife Fans will appreciate the abundance of life in this unique ecosystem of the everglades.
Wildlife includes, but is not limited to, alligators, turtles, manatees, deer, bobcats, panthers, raccoons, snakes; birds such as egrets, osprey, spoonbills, herons, storks, vultures and the list goes on. Although I did not see bobcats, panthers or manatees, a beautiful show of nature greeted me every day!

I am an avid traveller who believes that travel means participation. Whether it be observing traditional cultures, eating native delicacies, or drinking local drinks, one must fully immerse oneself to truly understand and enjoy a destination.

From West Palm- wanted to cycle the trail on 12/27/2020. Struggled with the Website because I didn’t find it easy to navigate and find out exactly where to start. Picked Belle Glade as our starting point (adventurous we just went out there). We planned to do at least half the trail. Poorly marked and because of ongoing construction we only made it approx 6 miles south before being told by security that the trail was closed and we weren’t supposed to be there. Why wouldn’t this be noted on the website and/or posted better- very disappointing after driving 50 mins to get there. I’m sure it will be a cool ride once its done…..any updates on that??

    So frustrated!
We visited here in 2012 at Clewiston and did a little part of the trail. Now returning in 2023 and the ACOE still has almost 50% of the trail closed!!!
I get the feeling some local suppliers are getting a huge payday from the FED!
